Campiglia Marittima and its surroundings
CAMPIGLIA MARITTIMA
Campiglia Marittima: a village with a unique charm in the Livorno Maremma. The village of Campiglia Marittima offers peace and relaxation with the possibility of being able to easily reach other nearby historic villages such as Populonia, Baratti, Suvereto, Sasseta, Monteverdi and Canneto.
The green surrounding the village of Campiglia Marittima is the perfect setting for hiking, horse riding or cycling. Tennis and golf enthusiasts will appreciate the nearby courses, while lovers of nautical disciplines can try their hand at the most enjoyable water sports on the coast. The sea is, in fact, only a few kilometers away: sandy and sandy beaches alternate with stretches of rocky coastline and cliffs that overlook the crystal clear water of the Tuscan sea.
VENTURINA TERME
Venturina, an important spa town in the province of Livorno located on the Aurelia road, is a place full of attractions, shops and meeting places and an important exhibition center. The visitor can admire the nearby beaches of the Tuscan Maremma, museums and archaeological finds that testify to the Etruscan past. A few kilometers away are important tourist centers such as Populonia and Campiglia Marittima.
SUVERETO
Let's say that it is not the best known village in Tuscany, even if it is one of the most beautiful in Italy; It is a small "gem" guarded by the Val di Cornia countryside and is part of the Città del Vino association. We begin by offering you immediately a visit to the numerous cellars of the surrounding area: here for centuries wines and typical products of renowned quality are produced abroad. But let's put aside the enogastronomic theme and talk about the characteristic Suverto's Palio delle Botti: an excellent opportunity to visit the village and fully enjoy its traditions. This historic "race" is held twice a year: for the Palio di S. Croce in May, in conjunction with the patron saint of Suvereto, and for the Palio dell'Imperatore, at night, on the eve of Ferragosto. A difficult and tiring race in which teams of "pushers" run 500-liter barrels on the ancient cobblestones of the center.
If instead you love churches, fortresses and alleyways, do not worry: Suvereto is a concentration of museums and historical buildings. Starting from the Rocca Aldobrandesca, dating back to the twelfth century; do not miss the Doll's artistic museum: a collection donated by Maria Micaelli that shows the evolution of these porcelain works of art over time.
BARATTI - POPULONIA
The promontory of Populonia and the Gulf of Baratti, represent (along with for example the area of the Maremma Park) one of the most characteristic landscapes of the Tuscan coast: hills, Mediterranean vegetation, blue sea. Here, there are traces of ancient populations, starting from the archaeological area near the beach of Baratti: an open air museum testifies to the greatness of the Etruscan industrial town of Populonia, during the Etruscan period, Baratti was an important commercial port at the center of the commercial routes of the Tirreno.
Today the park of Archaeological-naturalistic of Populonia and Baratti is a place not to be missed for those visiting the area. The park covers about 80 hectares between the slopes of the promontory of Piombino and the Gulf of Baratti. It houses one of the most important contexts of Etruscan civilization for traces of steel and iron working and for the cultural and commercial functions that developed with it. The Etruscan Populonia was divided into the upper and lower cities.
SAN VINCENZO
Of the medieval San Vincenzo remains to be seen the Tower of the famous Battle of San Vincenzo of 1505 completely restored. New, indeed brand new, the Tourist Port that allows nautical tourism to find an excellent landing point within the Tuscan archipelago.
In addition to the sea, San Vincenzo offers the possibility of nature trails linked to the presence of the Rimigliano Park and the hilltop village of San Carlo, a former mining village nowadays greatly appreciated for its naturalistic and scenic location in the hills of the Val di Cornia.
San Vincenzo, which has linked its economy to tourism as well as being equipped for athletes, is concerned with linking its name to festive occasions. In May there is the Palamita Festival. The Palamita also known as "Sardinian Sardinian" is an excellent fish of the "bluefish" family, the same as tuna: it is very similar to mackerel, but has a more elongated body. On the occasion of the festival in San Vincenzo there is also a lively agri-food market.
Another occasion for fun is the Sea Carnival held in February and repeated in July.
CASTAGNETO CARDUCCI
Just the name of the village to understand the poetry and the setting, Castagneto Carducci is caressed by a thick forest of chestnut trees and in its streets, dotted with small historic artistic wonders, echo the verses of the poet who lived here as a child for some years . But the town actually contains more motorcycles: populated by almost 9 thousand inhabitants, set in the lush heart of the Tuscan Maremma Livornese Castagneto Carducci is one of the most popular destinations of the Etruscan Coast.
Lying in a flat area along the coast, in correspondence with the important Bolgheri Wildlife Reserve, it slightly ripples inland where the countryside draws hills and hills. With such a view it is not surprising that the most important resource is the strong tourism of splendid beaches to which is added the gastronomic one.
BOLGHERI
In the hinterland of the Costa degli Etruschi, less than 10 km from the sea, the small precious village of Bolgheri awaits you. Get there along the famous Viale dei Cipressi, a straight avenue flanked by tall cypress trees, almost 5 km long that from the Via Aurelia will take you right in front of the village. This very special and evocative road is celebrated by one of the most important Italian poets of the nineteenth century, Giosuè Carducci.
Approaching the village, you will begin to see the fascinating red brick castle of Bolgheri among the foliage of the trees, so beautiful and perfect as to look as if it had just come out of a children's book of fairy tales. It is just beyond this beautiful castle that develops the city center. Before arriving, you can leave your car in the small paid car park on your right. A few steps on foot and you will be right in front of the tower and the gateway to the village. Just above the door you will certainly notice the large coat of arms of the Counts Della Gherardesca, an ancient noble family that owned the castle since 1200.
Bolgheri will conquer you with its gathered center, the characteristic stone and brick houses, the shops full of food and wine products, the restaurants and the wine bars. The visit of the village in itself and for itself will not take long, but I recommend you enjoy it in all calm. Bolgheri is perfect for a relaxing walk, which you can spend browsing through the characteristic shops and alleys of the village and enjoying a nice snack or an aperitif. Stop for a romantic sunset dinner, the illuminated castle at night is full of charm and will be the perfect setting for a special evening.
If you are traveling with children, you will also find restaurants with gardens and outdoor spaces where you can play them.
FOLLONICA
Once an important iron and steel center, today Follonica has been reborn as a tourist center of great importance. Its beaches, free and wild, embellish the great gulf and invite us to get to know the splendid sea of Tuscany.
Follonica is one of the most popular places on the coast of Grosseto thanks to its magnificent gulf that extends from the promontory of Piombino to Punta Ala: an expanse of over 40 km made of fine sandy beaches and wild bays that highlight the most beautiful side of the Maremma. Seaside holidays in Tuscany in these parts are suitable for families with children, both for lovers of unspoiled nature, and for young people looking for night time entertainment.
Follonica agrees all: and does not fail to tell us something about his past, represented by a piece of history of industrial development in this part of the region.
MASSA MARITTIMA
Massa Marittima, which despite its name is more than twenty kilometers from the sea, is considered one of the medieval gems of Tuscany.
Its origins are shrouded in mystery and in spite of the fact that in its surroundings traces of human settlements from the Bronze Age have been found, that in the Etruscan period the area was known for the wealth of its mines and that probably the present city was the Massa Veternense Roman, the settlement remained on the margins of history until at least the ninth century when it became the center of episcopal temporal power thanks to the transfer of the Episcopal see of Populonia due to the degradation and abandonment of this city. The bishop preferred to leave the coast become swampy and subject to continuous raids by the Greek and Saracen pirates to retreat into the heart of the metalliferous hills. It seems, however, that initially Massa Marittima was not chosen as the seat, in fact in 1016 the first certain traces of the existence of a church on site and even the beginning of the twelfth century the sure news of the establishment of the episcopal see.
